Grave Location:  His body was not recovered. Commemorative marker in Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan, Kansas.

 

Bio:  Elmer and his brother Forest served aboard the U.S.S. Houston. The Houston was attacked by the Japanese and sunk on Feb. 28, 1942. Elmer’s body was never found, and Forest survived the attack and was captured by the Japanese. He was a POW in a Japanese camp in Burma for nearly 18 mos. Forest’s POW records say he died of epilepsy, which likely means he had contracted malaria.
